I have created a character in the novel called Danny, who is dragooned into being the assistant to Tace Holgate (named after my g-g-g-grandmother - great name, eh?) . I've been writing a chapter from his point of view for the last couple of days. He seems the most strongly developed in my head and I can slip into his character very easily. I think I've based him on a young version of me.
Not sure how I should get more into the head of the chief protagonist seeing as I've not been a woman ever in my life.
Maybe this is why I normally enjoy writing short stories in preference to novels. It's easy to imbue characters with aspects of yourself and hard to have them behave in ways that you don't normally. It will be my job, over the course of the novel, to make sure that each character is distinct as a separate person. I don't know how well I have done that so far. I've a feeling that some of the characters behave too much like each other.
This'll all come out in the rewrite I suppose.
I managed to catch up a bit with the writing. With one thing or another, I had managed to get up to chapter five handwritten plugging away daily on the train and only up to the beginning of chapter three typed. I finished typing up chapters 3 and 4 at the weekend and I'm now up to over 16,000 words.
God knows what it reads like.
After letting the goatee grow out, I decided that I miss the whole beard too much and decided to regrow it. I love the process of growing a beard from nothing. It's so exciting to see daily changes to my face and it just feels so great.
I encourage every man to give it a try just to see what it's like.
